Distinguished Faculty Members

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth employs accomplished faculty members who are dedicated to advancing their disciplines through teaching, research, and community service.

In fact, 11 faculty members have been named Fulbright Scholars since 2009, two faculty members were selected to receive Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Awards from the National Science Foundation in 2013–2014, and one faculty member has received the MacDowell Colony Fellow in recognition of artistic excellence.

The University offers graduate students small classes, solid relationships with faculty members, state-of-the-art laboratories, and a variety of research centers and institutes. These amenities make it possible for students to engage in advanced study, research, and creative work.

UMass Dartmouth Funding for Graduate Students

UMass Dartmouth offers several financial programs to help degree-seeking, matriculated graduate students fund their education. Students may qualify for teaching, research, or administrative assistantships; federal loans; University scholarships; and Federal Work Study funds. They may also obtain non-need-based employment on campus or seek off-campus employment. Additionally, doctoral candidates may receive merit-based fellowships that include annual stipends and full-tuition waivers.

The University of Massachusetts School of Law-Dartmouth

The University of Massachusetts is home to the first and only public law school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Located in Dartmouth, MA, the UMass School of Law provides students with the intellectual and professional training needed to practice law in a variety of settings and meet the state's bar requirements. It consists of three programs -- full-time day, part-time day, and evening/weekend -- that lead to the Juris Doctor degree. UMass Law is approved by the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar of the American Bar Association. In May of 2017, UMass Law was awarded the Massachusetts Bar Association’s Public Service Award. UMass School of Law ranks #3 in the nation in public service employment of graduates.

Doctoral Programs at UMass Dartmouth

The University provides a diverse range of doctoral programs that provide students with the comprehensive education needed to excel in a complex and dynamic world.

UMass Dartmouth offers 11 independent, collaborative PhD programs: biomedical engineering and biotechnology, chemistry, engineering and applied science, electrical engineering, Integrated biology, Luso-Afro-Brazilian studies and theory, marine science and technology, mathematics education, nursing, and Educational Leadership and Policy Studies.

Master's Degree Programs

UMass Dartmouth has 30 master's degree programs, including art education, biology, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, fine arts, nursing, public policy, psychology, chemistry, marine science and technology, Portuguese studies, professional writing, and business administration. Some of the programs emphasize research while others focus on professional practice.

Because the university is located on Massachusetts' SouthCoast, students in certain disciplines use "living laboratories" such as Buzzards Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to conduct valuable research. Moreover, the University's extensive library collection, art studios, and business, engineering, and science incubator facilities provide excellent resources for advanced study.

Graduate Certificate Programs

Students who are interested in pursuing specialized fields or gaining teaching licensure will benefit from UMass Dartmouth's graduate certificate programs. Certificates can be earned in more than 30 programs, including acoustics, communications, international business, teaching, environmental policy, fine arts, artisanry, accounting and web interaction and design.

Several programs can be completed online and many consist of coursework that can be applied toward the University's master's degree programs.

Students in formal graduate certificate programs may qualify for student loans.

Graduate Student Housing

Graduate students may apply for on-campus housing. The University has a residential complex specifically designed for graduate students and also provides resources to assists students with locating suitable off-campus housing.

Graduate Student Life at UMass Dartmouth

UMass Dartmouth provides a supportive, diverse community that helps students achieve success. Resources, including the Academic Advising Center, International Study and Travel Office, and Career Resource Center, Counseling and Student Development Center, Frederick Douglass Unity House, Religious Resource Center, and Women's Resource Center help students maintain a sense of well-being, achieve personal growth, and celebrate diversity.

The University also offers more than 180 student clubs and organizations, 23 NCAA Division III varsity sports, and countless community service opportunities.

Beyond UMass Dartmouth

UMass Dartmouth is located in Dartmouth on the SouthCoast of Massachusetts and is approximately one hour from Boston, 35 minutes from Providence, Rhode Island, and 30 minutes from Cape Cod. The campus is minutes from shopping centers, restaurants, movie theaters, beaches, and nature trails. The region is rich in history, diversity, and culture – providing students with a plethora of options to explore of arts, culture, recreation, and entertainment.
