The Graduate Program in Cancer and Cell Biology is an interdepartmental graduate program with expertise in many critical areas of modern Cancer and Cell Biology research. The mission of the CCB Graduate Program is to train the next generation of scientists and educators in basic mechanisms of molecular and cellular function with an emphasis on understanding mechanisms of cancers. It is their philosophy that PhD training must be intellectually stimulating, scientifically rigorous, and geared toward developing the lifelong learning and critical thinking skills that will prepare graduates to be successful as research scientists, educators, and/or professionals in a variety of other fields.
All PhD students accepted to the program receive full tuition remission, a nationally competitive stipend, and a health insurance plan.
Program faculty are concentrated in the UC Department of Cancer Biology, which administers the Program, and in the Division of Experimental Hematology and Cancer Biology at Children's Hospital, with additional faculty drawn from more than 10 other departments/divisions at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.
Faculty selected to join the program are recognized leaders in their fields, and provide excellence, dedication, and personal involvement in graduate training. As a consequence, UC graduate students excel in research and are highly successful in their scientific careers.
Successful completion of the program typically involves four to six years beyond the bachelor's degree. Over 90 percent of graduates typically go on to postdoctoral training either in academic or industrial settings. The majority of graduates eventually assume research or teaching careers in academia, but many take research positions in biotech, government, or pharmaceutical companies, with scientific and technical writing firms, or in the healthcare or medical professions.
All required materials must be submitted online to the University of Cincinnati Graduate School by January 15; however, it is advisable to complete all applications by December 15, since there are limited slots available in the program and the school reviews applications as they are completed.
After a thorough screening of applications, personal interviews will be arranged for a select group of competitive candidates, typically in January or February. Some interviews will be on campus while others will be conducted electronically. The interview serves as an opportunity for the applicant to meet faculty and graduate students, to see the Program's research facilities, and for members of the Program to evaluate the prospective student.
While the university uses grades and test scores as part of their ranking process, they give greatest emphasis to the candidate's personal statement, research experience, letters of recommendation, and interviews. For select candidates, an "offer of admission" will be made between January and April of the spring prior to the summer admission. The program begins July 1. New students are only admitted once per year.
