The "America's Medical School" is Located Just Outside of Nation's Capital

Dubbed the "America's Medical School," Uniformed Services University was established by Congress in 1972 to provide medical and public health degrees with a focus on protecting those in the military. The School of Medicine Graduate Programs were established in 1980 to train basic scientists and public health practitioners.

The University is located just outside of Washington, D.C., in Bethesda, Maryland, in a park-like setting that is across the street from the National Institutes of Health and on the base campus of Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Medical School with a Unique Mission

The School of Medicine Graduate Programs in Biomedical Sciences and Public Health is part of the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine. The School of Medicine is accredited by the MSCHE and the LCME.

Research training emphasizes modern methods in molecular biology, cell biology and interdisciplinary approaches. https://www.usuhs.edu/eid

Graduate Program in Molecular & Cell Biology

This interdisciplinary Ph.D. program offers training to address many of the fundamental questions of modern biology ranging from protein-nucleic acid interactions to cytokines, growth factors, and developmental biology. Prospective students should have a background in biological or chemical sciences. Study for the M.S. degree is available to uniformed officers. https://www.usuhs.edu/mcb

Graduate Program in Neuroscience

This is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program for students with strong training in the biological, behavioral, and/or physical sciences. Department of Preventive Medicine and Biometrics

Graduate Programs in Public Health are offered at the master's and doctoral levels. The Master of Public Health (MPH), Master of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (MTM&H), Master of Health Administration and Policy (MHAP) and the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) programs are designed for students with at least three years of experience in a health-related field. The Doctorate in Public Health (DrPH) program prepares individuals for leadership roles in research, teaching, or policy development, with a particular emphasis on public health issues of global or military significance. Two Ph.D. programs are offered: Medical Zoology, for students with a master's degree in entomology or parasitology who wish to pursue further study in field-oriented medical parasitology or vector biology; and Environmental Health Sciences, which includes environmental health science research particularly in the area of military-relevant exposure assessment. https://www.usuhs.edu/pmb

Department of Medicine

In keeping with the Uniformed Services University's mission, the Graduate Programs in Health Professions Education (HPE) are designed to be the premier provider of health professions education for the Military Health System (MHS). Through leadership in teaching, research, and scholarship, the Graduate Programs in HPE provide direct benefit to the uniformed services and other federal agencies by producing a cadre of leaders with expertise in the field of health professions education.

The overarching goal of the Graduate Programs in HPE is to educate practitioners who will serve as academic leaders (e.g., deans, program directors, department heads) and will contribute to the continuous advancement of health professions education and research. Graduates of the program are uniquely situated to take major leadership roles within the MHS. https://www.usuhs.edu/hpe

Interested candidates have three different program options:

  • Foundations in Health Professions Education (FHPE)
The FHPE is a certificate program designed to be a stepping stone toward the MHPE or PhD in HPE.
  • Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE)
The MHPE program is the cornerstone of the Graduate Programs in HPE; it provides broad scholarly experience in the theory and practice of HPE by providing learners with the opportunity to participate in a series of formal courses, conduct original research, and obtain practical experiences to further enhance their leadership and educator skills.
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Health Professions Education (PhD in HPE)
The PhD in HPE is the highest academic degree one can attain at the University; it is meant to serve those select students who desire to be at the forefront of the scholarship, leadership, and teaching of health professions students and residents. Although a master’s degree (e.g., MHPE, MPH, MEd, or MS degree) is not a prerequisite for the PhD in HPE, it is highly desirable.
