Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT)

Established in 1829, the Rochester Institute of Technology is a private, coeducational university located in Rochester, New York in the northeastern region of the United States. 

A leader in preparing students for careers in the dynamic global environment, the university has a diverse range of programs from engineering, science, and technology to the arts, business, education, humanities, and social sciences. It consists of 9 colleges that provide career-oriented programs and experiential learning.

Rochester Institute of TechnologyÔÇÖs College of Science

The College of Science is Rochester Institute of Technology’s dynamic math and science education powerhouse. Enrolling more than 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students in Fall 2019, the College of Science offers 11 undergraduate degrees, 13 minors, and 14 graduate degrees. Students study life and physical sciences, mathematics, and more in an engaging environment. 

RIT is the third largest source of undergraduate STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) degrees among all private universities in the nation. All  students are required to complete experiential learning such as a co-op, REU, paid research, and research for credit at the College of Science.

The College of Science consists of six schools and centers:

School of Chemistry and Materials Science

The School of Chemistry and Materials Science at RIT offers chemistry and biochemistry undergraduate degree programs that prepare students for professional work with physicists, biologists, imaging scientists, geologists, and other scientists in team settings.The materials science graduate program seeks to provide solutions for a number of different fields including energy, medicine, clothing, and equipment production. 

Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science

Students in the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science learn how to program a computer to process images, compress them, and sharpen them. They work in research labs trying to understand how the human eye-brain system uses vision to help us sense the world around us. They participate in internships and co-ops in industry and government, to places like Lockheed Martin, Google, Apple, Los Alamos National Lab, and many more.

Integrated Sciences Academy

The Integrated Sciences Academy programs include science exploration, a first-year program that allows students to gain hands-on experience in order to best select a major, and the color science program, which explores all aspects of color from lighting, through material properties, to human perception. The academy also houses the Munsell Color Science Laboratory, the preeminent academic laboratory dedicated exclusively to the science of color.

Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences

Students in the Thomas H. Gosnell School of Life Sciences are prepared to become the next generation of innovative researchers, environmental scientists, computational biologists, medical doctors, pharmacists, and genomic data analysts. Whether it’s a cancer researcher developing a new vaccine or a biologist protecting our clean water, students confront the toughest life science issues facing the world today and find solutions to them.

School of Mathematical Sciences

The School of Mathematical Sciences is known for expertise in mathematical and computational modeling, data science, and scientific inference.With a 3:1 student-to-faculty ratio, students are equipped with a deep understanding of mathematical and statistical principles, tools to apply those skills to real-world problems, and the ability to express complex ideas in everyday language. 

School of Physics and Astronomy

The School of Physics and Astronomy at RIT offers a comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for employment in research, industry, and teaching, and preparation for graduate study in physics and related fields.

The astrophysical sciences and technology doctoral and master’s programs offer extensive curricula and research opportunities spanning topics in stellar, galactic and extragalactic astrophysics, general relativity and gravitational wave astronomy, and instrument/detector development.

College of Science faculty-led research at Rochester Institute of Technology

Students in the College of Science engage in research with faculty in areas of science including life sciences, chemistry, physics, math and statistics, and imaging and color science or in a teaching/learning assistantship with faculty supervisors for credit or compensation. Examples of active research areas in the College of Science include microbiology, virology, aquatic ecology, genomics, bioinformatics, plant biology, nutritional physiology, organic chemistry, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, material science, photonics, astronomy, remote sensing, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), color perception, and cognition.

RIT faculty consistently publishes more than 100 peer-reviewed articles per year including high profile journals such as “Science and Nature”.

Experiential Learning at Rochester Institute of Technology

Rochester Institute of Technology has one of the largest cooperative education programs in the world, annually placing more than 4,500 students in more than 6,200 co-op assignments with more than 2,200 employing organizations. A co-op gives students real-world job experience to help inform future career decisions. Students do not pay tuition while on co-op.

In addition, Imaging Science graduates from the Chester F. Carlson Center for Imaging Science are highly sought after in industry, with 99% of graduates moving on to their top choice career or graduate school immediately after graduation with starting salaries up to the $70,000 range.

Rick Kittles ‘89, Ph.D. 

Dr. Kittles is a genetic biologist and co-founder of African Ancestry, Inc. He is also the Director of Population Genetics at the Center for Applied Genetics and Genomic Medicine.

Steve Wear ‘91, MS (Imaging Science)

Wear is the co-founder and a member of the board of directors of Integrity Applications Inc. (IAI), an engineering services and software development company primarily supporting the intelligence community and other civil, defense and intelligence customers, with a focus on intelligence surveillance reconnaissance systems.  IAI’s customers include the United States Air Force, Boeing Co., Harris Corp. and Lockheed Martin.
